THE SAFER STREETS DRAMA PROJECT
“The Safer Streets Drama Project” is a holistic programme for schools, youth communities and young offender institutions which aims to raise self-esteem and aspiration, give young people the tools to manage their lives effectively, and reduce self-destructive and anti-social behaviour.
It is primarily aimed at young people in Key Stage 3, aged 11 to 14 and it links directly to the PSHE and Citizenship
curriculum.
The programme is led by a team of professional drama workshop facilitators/actors. Ten Ten Theatre can offer three different structures for the delivery of the project:
- a drama workshop, performance of the play and dissemination over the course of one day with a whole year-group (up to 150);
- a week-long programme over five consecutive days working with larger or multiple year groups;
- an adapted version of the programme for use in Young Offender Institutions and Pupil Referral Units over five consecutive days.
At the heart of the project is a 60-minute drama, "Sam's Story". This tells the story of Sam Collins, aged 15, recently involved in a serious knife crime incident. Starting at the end, we journey back in time, prompting the participants to explore the circumstances surrounding Sam’s choices, the critical decisions, the environment, thought-processes and alternative choices.
This project is not a one-off but a springboard to further engagement. The young people are taken on a journey through participatory interactive workshops led by the team.
Ten Ten Theatre also issue a Teacher Resource pack directly related to the play, providing lesson plans for further study through the PSHE and Citizenship curriculum (KS3).
The programme was officially launched in March 2010 at The Abbey Centre, Westminster..
